It’s not difficult to find an expert roofing contractor or siding company. What makes it complicated are the many choices. However, not all of those choices are what you need. Many contractors are simply out to take advantage of homeowners. It’s up to you to vet a contractor to find out whether they are an honest company worthy of your business.
To make the selection easier for you, here are some questions you should ask a contractor.
1. Where Is Your Office?
An honest contractor has a physical address and contact details. Fly-by-night businesses or storm chasers are typically from out of town. It’s always safer to choose local. Don’t forget to ask how long they’ve been in business and to drive over to their office just to check.
2. Can You Provide Some Referrals?
A veteran residential or commercial roofing repair or siding installation contractor would provide referrals immediately, even if you don’t ask. However, if you want to be more certain, ask for their last three to five clients. The referrals on their list are typically their favorite clients. The last few clients will help you determine whether the contractor is consistent.
3. What Are Your Warranties?
Expect your new siding to be covered by a manufacturer’s warranty. Check online to find out whether you’re receiving a fair warranty. Your contractor should also provide workmanship warranties.
4. Do You Have Insurance?
If they say no, that should be your cue to walk away. If they say yes, then ask for proof. That insurance will protect you in case something happens on the job, such as an injury or damage. Check if the insurance allows them to install siding in your location.
5. What Is the Payment Schedule?
Most residential roof installation and siding contractors would ask for some of the money up-front. Talk to your contractor about the payment schedule. If the contractor asks for most or all of the payment immediately, that’s a sign that they cannot be trusted.
